What to check when choosing a Jira alternative

Looking for a Jira alternative does not necessarily mean your current tool is inadequate. A team may want fewer settings, a simpler board or support and development in one place. A useful comparison starts with an honest inventory of the features you actually use.

Inventory actual usage

Review real issues for sprints, worklogs, attachments, parent issues, dependencies, releases and custom fields. A configured field is not proof that people rely on it. Sample a month of active work and separate shared requirements from exceptions used by one project. Ask the people completing the work, not just the administrators configuring the system.

Include Jira Free in the comparison

Jira also offers a Free plan. Comparing a “free Jira alternative” only with paid Jira tiers can produce a misleading conclusion. Check current limits on Atlassian’s official pricing page. Taskending focuses on a compact shared issue model, customer requests and MCP connectivity. It does not claim to reproduce every Jira enterprise feature, plugin or integration.

Understand Taskending’s scope

Taskending includes boards and lists, assignments, priorities, sprints, estimates, time tracking, attachments, issue links and target releases. Customer portal and API requests enter the same workflow. The Gmail bridge requires configuration. Company, project and customer permissions are separated. Advanced SLA calendars, a custom workflow designer, SSO and automatic GitHub pull-request synchronization are outside the current release.

Map meaning, not just field names

A “Done” status in two projects may represent different acceptance conditions. Document status, priority and user mappings per project. Preserve comment visibility, attachment access and link direction. Taskending does not currently offer a one-click Jira importer. Begin with a small pilot and a validated migration plan rather than treating a matching column name as proof that no information will be lost.

Decide through a short pilot

Try one team’s sprint or one week of support requests. Exercise issue creation, customer replies, worklogs and your reporting needs. If a required capability is missing, a cleaner interface alone is not a reason to migrate. People searching for Jira or Linear have different needs; the best choice is the tool that supports your actual workflow.
